A comfortable Fes to Merzouga itinerary usually needs four to six riding days, depending on whether you want time in Ifrane and Azrou, a measured crossing of the Middle Atlas and a proper arrival in the desert. The direct distance is roughly 470 to 520 km, but the scenic route and overnight stops make the total journey longer.
A practical sequence runs from Fes to Ifrane and Azrou, then through Midelt and the Zad Pass toward Errachidia. From there, the Ziz Valley leads to Erfoud and finally Merzouga. The roads are mostly paved, with mountain bends, high-altitude exposure and long open sections where fuel and weather planning matter.
Intermediate road confidence is recommended because the route combines city traffic, mountain curves, elevation changes and long stages. Winter conditions can affect the Middle Atlas, while heat, wind and low visibility can change the experience around the desert. Check conditions before each stage and keep the daily distance realistic.
A Himalayan 450, CFMOTO 450MT, Tenere 700, V-Strom 800DE or BMW GS can suit the route depending on rider level, passenger use and luggage. A one-way return in Merzouga is not automatic, but Fes pickup and another-city return can be assessed when dates, motorcycle rotation and logistics align.
